Between now until December 25th, The Marketing Smart Aleck will feature some of the best, worst and most ridiculous Christmas commercials of yesteryear.
Today’s choice was a staple of December television throughout the Seventies: One of many Norelco spots in which an animated Santa Claus rides an electric razor head around the North Pole.
If you grew up in the Seventies, chances are you saw this commercial during your annual viewing of “Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer,” “Frosty the Snowman” or some other holiday special of the era. When I was a wee lad, I enjoyed these ads a great deal. Of course I was too young to shave or to afford an electric shaver to buy for my father as a gift. Meanwhile, my father, who was a loyal Norelco user for as long as I can remember, would not have been swayed in the least by an animated Santa. And one wonders how American women back then reacted to receiving one of those “Ladybug” shaver kits. Nothing says “Merry Christmas!” to Mom quite like hinting that she’s too hairy.
Those issues and the corny “Noëlco” pun aside, the spot still retains a nostalgic charm for those of a certain age. Just try not to think too much about the fact that Santa doesn’t shave.
